PRE-SCREENING ASSESSMENT TOOL

The Sound!Start Phonics for Letters and Sounds Pre-Screening Assessment Tool

is intended for use during the Spring / Summer Term of Y1 and is a quick and easy way to gain a “snapshot” indication of your results in the Y1* Phonics Screening Check. It is administered as a fun reading game for small groups of children and takes less than 5 minutes per child to complete ensuring that valuable teaching time is not lost prior to the Check. The results provide a clear indication of children who would benefit from additional support with phonics for reading in order to achieve the threshold score when the Screening Check is administered in June and guidance is provided to support item-level analysis in order to identify specific focuses for individuals, intervention groups and whole class teaching in order to build confidence and improve results in the Screening Check.
