Classroom Resources

Successful implementation of the Letters and Sounds programme requires teachers to carefully match their resources – the letters and words children are asked to read during and beyond lessons – to the programme.  This involves keeping a careful track of the GPCs (grapheme-phoneme correspondences) children have been taught and the blending and segmenting strategies they are able to use for word-reading and spelling.

Sound!Start Phonics for Letters and Sounds Classroom Resources have been specifically designed for use in Letters and Sounds schools and show complete fidelity to the programme. Most of the resources follow a specially designed colour-coded system for Letters and Sounds which supports teachers to follow the correct progression through the programme and to consolidate teaching in manageable chunks.  The design of the cards also enables teachers to easily (*) identify suitable resources for each phase of the programme and to prioritise more common “high frequency” words.

The range includes resources to support teaching Early Blending Skills, GPC Recognition and Recall (including a wall frieze) and Word Reading.  Resources are printed onto thick card which does not require lamination and packaged into sturdy boxes for easy organisation and storage.  Both letters and words are printed in a clear font matched to most reading schemes.

Consistency is key.  Children need to recognise letters and words in a wide range of contexts and presenting them in the same format as children move from Reception into KS1, are taught by different teachers, and perhaps experience additional intervention outside of their usual classroom context scaffolds learning and promotes repetition in order to embed key knowledge and skills.  Although all the resources are available to purchase separately, Resource Collections including Class Sets for Reception and Year One and a set for Intervention Support are available providing a cost-effective way for schools to use them across all their phonics teaching ensuring a consistent approach is in place.
